          6:30PM Screening

Join us for the last event of the inaugural Beach=Culture season - a screening of Show People starring Marion Davies, with introduction by film producer and historian Elaina Archer.

Show People is one of the most enjoyable films of the silent era; one of Hollywood's first spoofs of itself and a document of the carefree days at the end of Hollywood's first golden era. Featuring a collaboration between talented and vivacious Marion Davies and King Vidor, one of the greatest directors of the silent era, this 1928 comedy is both hilarious and beautifully made. Co-starring one of Davies' dearest friends, William Haines, this film is a fantastic showcase of the excellence of silent cinema at a time when budgets allowed for high production values and the best of the best...including cameos from some of the greatest stars to grace the MGM lot, and glimpses into the whirlwind life of film production in the 1920's. Many celebrities are seen in bit parts: Charlie Chaplin, William S. Hart, Douglas Fairbanks, John Gilbert, Lew Cody, Elinor Glyn, Mae Murray, Louella Parsons - and even director King Vidor himself.

It doesn't get much better than this! Great acting, seamless direction and, above all, Marion Davies at her most charming. There is even a wonderful moment when Davies as her character Peggy Pepper sees Marion Davies the star get out of a car and dismisses her with a crinkle of her nose and a shake of her head...Not one to miss!
